About the service

At York Mind, we know that relationships play a vital role in our emotional wellbeing. The connections we have with partners, family, friends, and the important people in our lives can be a source of joy, comfort, and belonging. But it’s also completely normal for relationships to feel difficult at times.

Relationship counselling can offer a safe, supportive space to explore what’s happening. It can help you make sense of your experiences, learn new ways of communicating, rebuild trust, or strengthen the relationships that matter most to you.

We can offer you 16 sessions, each one lasting around 50 minutesThese are held weekly on Wednesdays, at either 5.30pm or 6.30pm, in-person at our premises at Highcliffe House in Clifton (YO30 6BP).

1How can relationship counselling help me?

We can support you with a wide range of relationship challenges, including:

  • Communication difficulties and misunderstandings
  • Conflict, tension, or feeling ‘stuck’
  • Emotional or physical intimacy concerns
  • Feeling disconnected or struggling to maintain closeness
  • Navigating changes within your relationship
  • Trust issues or recurring relationship patterns
  • Family and friendship dynamics
  • Stress that is affecting your relationships

2Who will I be working with?

Our relationship counsellor is Ben Hutchinson.

"I am a trainee therapist currently training with the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT) and have worked in the mental health field for 5 years. I draw on a blend of therapeutic approaches tailored to your needs, rather than using a one-size-fits-all model. I work reflexively, listening deeply and responding to what matters most to you as an individual or as part of a relationship. Our sessions are collaborative, we’ll explore patterns, share perspectives, and work towards positive change together."

All York Mind counsellors are either fully qualified or trainee counsellors assessed as fit to practise. Our counsellors are DBS‑cleared, members of professional bodies (such as BACP or UKCP), receive clinical supervision, and work in line with the BACP Ethical Framework.

3How do I refer?

We encourage people seeking counselling to self‑refer. For relationship counselling, only one referral form needs to be completed, but everyone attending must agree to take part.

To refer in, simply complete our online referral form (The link will be disabled if referrals are temporarily closed.)

We aim to contact you within two weeks of receiving your referral.

4What happens after I'm referred?

A member of the counselling team will contact you to arrange a telephone assessment (30–60 minutes). The assessment helps us understand your needs and whether the service is right for you. If appropriate, we'll offer you a place for counselling.

There may be a waiting period depending on availability.
