About the service

online meetingAt York Mind our Adult One-to-One Service offers coaching online for people wanting to focus on the present and future of their lives. We offer up to 6 coaching sessions, each session lasting up to an hour. Much of the benefit from coaching happens between sessions, so we suggest that you leave at least two weeks between each session to make the most of this. Sessions can be spread out over up to 6 months, allowing you to act on any decisions you make during the process.

How can this help me?

A simplified definition of coaching is that it is future-oriented, helping individuals achieve specific goals and improve aspects of their lives. In contrast, counselling often delves into past experiences and emotions to address deeper emotional issues and promote healing in the present. It is sometimes said that counselling is reparative (healing) in nature, whilst coaching has a developmental focus on the future. There is often some overlap between counselling and coaching, and you may find that one leads to the other.

Your coach will listen to you non-judgmentally and offer you an appropriate balance of support and challenge as you work towards the goal(s) or outcome(s) you would like to achieve. Your coach can also help you to identify strategies and tools to improve your overall mental health. They will support you to try things out, make your own choices, and evaluate your own progress.

Who can access the service?

What our clients say

The following account of a coaching experience at York Mind was shared by a client in 2025. Names have been changed.

"I worked with Max over several months. I wanted to lead a more fulfilling professional life and was trying to make steps towards doing so already, but felt slightly paralysed by the lack of concrete goals and other personal setbacks I'd faced (around emotional regulation and relational intelligence). The range of directions I could have taken in my life at the time was quite overwhelming.

Max first helped me identify my "North Star", a fixed anchor of focus amidst the uncertainty of life. He then encouraged me to build my goals around that.

Max then responded proactively to the biggest challenges I was facing, which tended to shift slightly from month to month. His breadth and depth of therapeutic and professional experience were evident from the flexibility and adaptiveness at the heart of our sessions.

With Max, I was able to talk through everything on my mind and weigh everything out before making my decisions. It was like having someone to help organise a garage workshop full of stuff, and find the right tools to fix a car, except the garage was my mind and the car represented the momentum of my life and how it measured up against my aspirations, lifestyle, and values.

Max provided great care to me as a client, adapting the frequency of sessions to suit my schedule and budget.

Max was an excellent listener, holding space for long periods, allowing me to work through my inner world. He also challenged my ideas, opinions, and self-limiting beliefs at appropriate times, with embodied kindness and consideration.

York Mind's life coaching service was excellent value, and Max was a great guy to work with."
