Cllr Andrew Waller, leader of City of York Council, opened the event at which over 150 people attended.

The two charities joined together to increase awareness of mental health issues and highlight ways in which people can help improve their mental health. 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in any one year.

A host of activities were organised including information stands, cake stalls, refreshments, tombola and a charity auction. The star attraction was a hot air balloon ride.

In his opening speech Councillor Waller said "World Mental Health Day is a global awareness campaign and this year's theme is about the all too-often neglected fact that mental health is an integral element of every individual's overall health and well-being. Today's event is to provide local people with information and advice on what help is available in York".

York and District Mind are thankful for the help and support they received from the retreat, City of York Council, Redrow for the Balloon Rides and for the support of Everyclick, Our Price Records for the charity auction.

World Mental Health Day 2009 - New website is a great way to help York and District Mind

As part of raising awareness of World Mental Health Day, York charity, York and District Mind has joined forces with a new insurance website donatesomeback.com which is set to help raise much needed funds for the charity.

Donatesomeback.com will donate up to £25 to charity for every home and car policy sold through the website and means that local people renewing their car or home insurance can now support the charity at the same time without it costing them a penny to donate.

The company behind the new website, donatesomeback Ltd, which works in partnership with Fortis Insurance Solutions, has pledged to donate 50% of its turnover to UK charities like York and District Mind and non-profit organisations and customers can choose which charity they would like to benefit, or they can nominate their own favourite if it is not listed on the website. The company is also calling for more charities to register so they too can benefit.

Mike Beckett, Director of York and District Mind comments: "York and District Mind's purpose is to help people to have better mental health and we particularly focus on vulnerable people. If by teaming up with Donatesomeback we can help people access a better deal and this reduces stress, it is a win situation and it will help the charity to diversify its funding, which in these less than certain economic times we really must do. The quality work we do is often targeted to help the most vulnerable members of our community, we are happy to work in partnership with those who can help! This year's World Mental Health theme will address the continuing need to "make mental health issues a global priority", and will stress the all too-often neglected fact that mental health is an integral element of every individual's overall health and well-being and we hope that by joining forces with Donatesomeback we can raise awareness of our charity even more."

Donatesomeback Director Mark Fenton who founded donatesomeback along with business partner Dan Handforth comments: "During any recession one of the first things people cut back on is donations to good causes, but of course, all these charities and non-profit organisations still need money to carry on their good work. With donatesomeback.com, we're giving people a way to make a contribution to their favourite good causes, just by buying products and services they needed anyway and they don't pay any extra."

"We'd like to encourage all charities and other good causes to register with us," adds Dan Handforth, "and it doesn't cost them a penny. Each month we feature one of our new members as charity of the month, so if customers don't have a favourite cause they can always nominate that month's charity for the donation."

If donatesomeback.com customers want to support a cause that isn't a member of the site, they have the ability to name that organisation when they buy. The donatesomeback team will contact that charity or non-profit organisation and if it registers, donatesomeback will make the donation as normal.
